Weak Economy Leads to Resume "Fluffing"

A weak economy and a shrinking job market are pushing some job-hunters to the point of desperation and misrepresentation. Resume "fluffing" occurs when an applicant intentionally misrepresents themselves on an application or resume. A study conducted by J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., the nation's leading provider of risk and regulatory management solutions, found 55 percent of 161 human resource professionals recently surveyed have discovered lies on resumes or applications when conducting pre-employment background or reference checks.

In an effort to work against these troubling trends, employers are increasing due diligence by adjusting the following:

  • Annual screening for existing employees
  • Complementing court searches with state or national database checks
